如果说语言学习的第一要义是交流本身,那么纠正发音的目的就在于拉近自身与 native speaker 的差距,虽然不可避免地对第二语言的学习者来说几乎不可能完全掌握第二语言的完全要义,但是避免交流障碍终归是好的。

一直想要总结一下遇到的各种计算机领域的 term 和 acronym 及其发音,但心想遇到的不多,也就无心整理,当然自己懒是主要原因。直到遇到了 非主流程序员的自我修养 一文,才觉得确实有整理一下的必要了,下述词汇均从上文给出的列表进行整理。

Debian

The project name is pronounced Deb’-ee-en, with a short e in Deb, and emphasis on the first syllable. This word is a contraction of the names of Debra and Ian Murdock, who founded the project. (Dictionaries seem to offer some ambiguity in the pronunciation of Ian (!), but Ian prefers ee’-en.)


Exposé

If you want to pronounce it right, like the French, you say: Ex-po-sé and the “é” is pronounced like the “a” from “Pages”. But Americans can’t pronounce it very well, you have to say the “é” without a “y” at the end.


GNOME

GNOME (pronounced /gˈnoʊm/ or /ˈnoʊm/) is a desktop environment that is composed entirely of free and open-source software. GNOME was originally an acronym for GNU Network Object Model Environment.

The name “GNU” is a recursive acronym for “GNU’s Not Unix!”; it is pronounced as one syllable with a hard g, like “grew” but with the letter “n” instead of “r”.

Maven

Maven, a Yiddish word meaning accumulator of knowledge, was originally started as an attempt to simplify the build processes in the Jakarta Turbine project.
